PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Initial teacher education programs provide candidates with the professional education necessary to become certified teachers. This program is for candidates who wish to teach in their area of expertise in the Intermediate and Senior divisions of Ontario secondary schools.

Faculty members in the Collaborative Degree in Workplace Learning and Social Change and CSEW participate in the Initial Teacher Education program through course delivery, program support and guest lecturing. Faculty involved in the research area of Learning and Work take a major role in the SP4, Secondary Program 4 (Education and Work).

SP4—Education and Work

Cohort Description

Business Studies and Technological Studies Teacher Candidates are connected to the Secondary Program cohort called "Education and Work" - SP4. The focus is on interdisciplinary approaches for both research and teaching in the area of education and work. Candidates preparing to teach are provided with a high level of academic experiences and research skills required for their teaching careers.

Program/Curriculum

In the SP4 Program, Candidates gain an understanding of the context of the growing complexities of educational workplaces, the knowledge society, diverse technologies and lifelong learning. The program is enhanced by the collaboration and commitment of two departments - Adult Education and Counselling Psychology (AECP) and Sociology and Equity Studies in Education (SESE) - that jointly provide resources and services for its overall quality. Such services include professional development through seminar series and research centres, orientation sessions, faculty advice, departmental newsletters and social events.

In addition to being eligible for a Diploma or B.Ed. and a teaching certificate, qualified Candidates will be given the opportunity to apply for a M.Ed. program that focuses on education and work. The program will offer a sequential enrollment in the B.Ed. and M.Ed. The program can be completed over two years and a summer session. Students need to be qualified for admission to the School of Graduate Studies. Candidates will be contacted early to discuss their admissibility to the School of Graduate Studies for the M.Ed. program.

Practicum/Internship

As in all OISE programs, SP4 includes 2 practicum sessions with Mentor Teachers on practical aspects of teaching and learning. In addition, like all Candidates, those in SP4 complete an internship in educational or workplace settings, from late April to the end of May.

Who Should Apply to SP4?

This program is compulsory for and exclusive to all candidates enrolled in I/S Business Studies and Technological Studies.

Detailed List of Topics

The CSEW is involved with the SP4 cohort which includes teacher candidates in the fields of business studies and technological studies. CSEW involvement has included coordination of the M.Ed. component of the SP4 program which supports applications of ITE graduates for entry into M.Ed. studies in the area of Education and Work.      This program has also introduced, encouraged and supported the participation of pre-service student in taking a specified set of ‘Education and Work’ based related studies options including some graduate courses (e.g. SES2942 ‘Education and Work’) as a means of acclimatizing and learning about graduate studies by association with graduate students in these courses.

SES2942/EDU5118: Education and Work (Peter Sawchuk)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purposes of this course are to engage critically with issues involved in the interrelations of learning and work, and to explore alternative explanations of these relationships. Learning and work will be broadly defined. The sphere of learning encompasses formal schooling, continuing education courses and training programs, informal education, informal self-directed learning and tacit learning throughout the life course. The sphere of work may include paid employment as well as other activities such as union activism, schoolwork, unpaid household labour, community volunteer work and so forth. We will critically analyze current dominant ideologies and contending theories of education-work relations, review relevant research literature on socio-economic and educational changes and on education-job matching, on-the-job learning, and we will study alternative models of future learning-work relations. Practical implications will be considered throughout the course. Special attention will be devoted to building awareness of different disciplinary and methodological traditions in the study of education, learning and work.
